Clean Water Services is a public utility committed to protecting water resources in Oregon’s Tualatin River Watershed. Nearly 450,000 customers benefit from clean water and healthy rivers and streams through innovative wastewater and stormwater services, flood management projects, water quality and stream enhancement projects, fish habitat protection and more. Wastewater is collected by a vast network of more than 800 miles of sewer lines and 41 pump stations and routed to one of four treatment plants; the organization has 287 employees.
Clean Water Services wanted to monitor the four treatment plants and its headquarter location with one solution. At each of the plants, the company has a global catalog server and several Cisco switches located in various areas. They wanted a solution that was easy to manage and set up. “We have several dozen virtual servers on one server,” said John Burleigh, Information System Analyst. “The issue we ran into is when doing maintenance work it was hard to verify if all of the systems were up and functioning.” This was especially a problem during late-night maintenance windows. “We wanted a solution that not only did your basic ping but would also check websites, services and disk space utilization,” said Burleigh. “Other solutions we tried were either cumbersome or just did not include a particular feature that was important to our organization.” Clean Water Services had no monitoring solution until it installed Paessler’s IPCheck Server Monitor.
Burleigh had worked with What’s Up Gold with a previous employer, but Clean Water Services wanted more than what What’s Up Gold could offer, and at an economical price. IPCheck Server Monitor fit the bill perfectly. “After doing a lot of research on the numerous monitoring systems out there we decided to give Paessler’s IPCheck a try,” said Burleigh. “It gives us around-the-clock monitoring of our server environment and network. No longer does the customer/user call us with an outage that we don’t know about.”
Having IPCheck in place gives the IS staff piece of mind. The time it takes to do weekly maintenance has dropped considerably. “This is a big win for us, and we still have not used all of the features of IPCheck,” said Burleigh. “The solution has helped our IS staff with meeting our yearly goals and better response time to outages and to the business. I would highly recommend it to a friend or colleague. I already have! It is an excellent monitoring solution.”
IPCheck Server Monitor from Paessler is a Windows-based software and multi-platform ASP service. IPCheck Server Monitor makes it easy and affordable to detect network and Web site failures early, minimizing downtime and avoiding economic impact.
