Issues with SNMP Helper Pro / Packet Sniffer sensors caused by DEP settings

Questa pagina anchora non esiste in Italiano. Confidiamo nella Vs. comprensione.

We have noticed that some customers have had issues with installations of SNMP Helper Pro. The process they followed was:

  • install SNMP Helper Pro
  • restart the SNMP service

This second step, necessary to activate the SNMP Helper Pro libraries, would then trigger an error, refusing to start. Beyond that, some customers then removed SNMP Helper Pro and noticed the SNMP service would no longer work at all. This, however, does not have to do with the SNMP Helper Pro library or, for that matter, the SNMP service. Basically, the problem was actually caused by the Microsoft DEP (Data Execution Prevention) functionality being active on the machine in case. In such instances, it is necessary to add the respective program or service (such as the SNMP.EXE) to the DEP exception list. Once the program in case is added, the software should work fine and the service should be fully functional.
Another option would be to change the DEP setting from the default "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" to the less restrictive "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only".

This particular functionality can at times also cause issues as regards packet sniffing sensors. If you are experiencing issuess accessing proper sensor data, check what the DEP settings are before turning to further troubleshooting.

Remember the SNMP Helper Pro library (as well as underlying libraries) use the standard Windows SNMP service in order to connect to the counters but do in no way affect the functioning of the Windows-based SNMP service. Any counters available solely through the SNMP Helper libraries will only be accessible as long as the libraries are installed. The counters will no longer exist after deinstalling the libraries in case.
