Why do we need hardware scanning?
Hardware is the first layer in an infrastructure organization – if that fails, then everything else from the servers, to the operating systems, to the applications and the processes fail. Your hardware has multiple possible points for failure and it is too important to reply on a human to check it. Having a monitoring system that scans your hardware at regular intervals is crucial to the survival of your organization.

How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
PRTG uses sensors to make network monitoring easy
PRTG uses sensors to scan or poll your devices through a specific protocol to gather the relevant data. PRTG has multiple vendor specific hardware sensors out of the box that covers monitoring of system health as well as individual components. In addition, we have generic SNMP and WMI sensors. PRTG also allows for the importing of MIB files to extend beyond our out of the box offerings so that additional hardware may be scanned by PRTG.

There is also a generic SNMP Hardware Status that can scan and monitor individual components through SNMP if none of our vendor specific sensors match your hardware.

WMI Vital System Data (V2) sensor
With the WMI Vital System Data (V2) Sensor PRTG can monitor the performance of your vital system parameters. It can gather metrics such as CPU usage (processor, privileged, user time and queue length), memory (page faults, reads and writes per second as well as committed bytes), and physical disk (time in percent, reads/writes per second and queue length).
SNMP Printer sensor
PRTG can also monitor your SNMP-enabled printer – it can even alert you when your toner is low!
Additional PRTG features
You can even get more detailed hardware scanner information by importing your MIB files into PRTG – you can select all or individual OIDs to get granular monitoring on your hardware!

PRTG offers real time notifications so when components are non-responsive or hit a defined threshold that you set you can be made aware of it as soon as possible. PRTG also has the ability for you to create custom maps/dashboards and reports on your hardware sensors so when your hardware is scanned you can view the data in a variety of ways.
