WMI stands for "Windows Management Instrumentation" and is the latest technology from Microsoft for monitoring and management of Windows based systems.
WMI allows a process to read out data for many Windows' configuration parameters as well as current system status values. Access can take place locally or remotely via a network connection. WMI is based on COM and DCOM and is integrated in Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and later. Add-ons are available for Windows 9x and NT4.
Products like Paessler's PRTG Network Monitor make use of the WMI functionality to monitor computers in network environments.
As accessing WMI counters over a network is not exactly trivial, the Paessler WMI Tester is a tool that can be used to test the accessibility of WMI counters in a quick and easy manner.
After starting the Paessler WMI Tester you can provide the following configuration data:
Now click the Test! button. After a while you will either see a result table showing the processes running on the machine or, in the event something went wrong, an error message.
Under this tab you can define the following:
Note that by default the WMI namespace used is CIMV2. Currently, this can not be changed.
